History

Calgary Block Parent AssociationThe Block Parent Program originated in London, Ontario in 1968 following the abduction and brutal murder of a child. In 1975 a trial Block Parent Program was started by a citizen in Forest Heights after learning about the Program in Edmonton. Shortly after starting the Program a child was found hanging in an auto wreckers yard and this event prompted hundreds of concerned citizens to become Block Parents.

student entry in CBPA poster contestIn August 1984, the CALGARY BLOCK PARENT ASSOCIATION was incorporated as a non-profit society under Alberta law. A proposal to Calgary Police Service, Community Services Section, resulted in their offer of an office.

In 1988 CBPA became a registered Canadian Charity and a member agency of the United Way of Calgary and Area.

The affairs of CBPA are managed by an elected Board of Directors, assisted by a part-time Executive Director, three part-time staff, and a four member Advisory Council. In addition all efforts are made to have a coordinator in each community.
