Who can be a Block Parent? | What are the responsibilities? | How to apply

  • Any responsible adult over the age of 18 years
  • Must pass police security-screening
  • Anyone concerned about the safety and well-being of citizens especially children
  • Single, married, divorced, working or retired individuals

What are the responsibilities of a Block Parent?

  • To offer their home to children as a place of safety from dangerous or frightening situations
  • To offer assistance to persons in distress by telephoning the necessary emergency services (i.e. Police, Fire Department, Ambulance, Tow Truck etc.). Information can be exchanged through a locked door if the volunteer is concerned about opening the door to an unfamiliar person.
  • To assist the Police by reporting suspicious or possible criminal activity in their community.
  • To complete an activity report whenever an incident occurs.

  • To provide food or beverage.
  • To provide toilet facilities, except in an emergency.
  • To provide transportation.
  • To administer first aid.
  • To leave their home to intervene in any situation.
  • To actively engage any dangerous person.

How to apply

  • Complete the application form for all individuals in the home
  • Include photocopies of ID for all residents 18 years and older
  • Mail application to the BP office

Please read the instructions carefully to avoid processing delays.
All adult applicants are screened by the Calgary Police Service.

Application forms may be obtained by contacting the Block Parent office, or you can download the form here (free Abobe Acrobat required). Applications typically take 6 to 8 weeks to process.

Approved applicants will receive a phone call regarding how to pick up your sign.
After that you can expect

  • an annual phone call from the Community Co-ordinator (if there is a volunteer in your area) to update CBPA records
  • an annual newsletter mailed to each BP home and business the first week in September. If you did not receive yours or would like a copy contact CBPA.
